1. AI and content creation was more than just a buzzword

AI took center stage at IBC 2024, showcasing its role as a game-changer in content creation. From advanced dubbing and subtitling to personalised content recommendations, AI is proving to be a vital tool. It’s transforming how media is produced and consumed, making content more accessible and engaging.

2. Women in Streaming Media: Showed us how bright the future was

Maria Rua Aguete of Omdia delivered a compelling session on the growing role of women in streaming media. The media and entertainment market is projected to surpass $1 trillion in 2024, with $392 billion from online video alone. Platforms like YouTube are leading the charge, having seen 107 billion hours watched in the U.S. in 2023. The future of video streaming is bright, with women driving much of this progress.

3. Gen Z media consumption trends were unveiled

Gen Z isn’t just glued to their smartphones. Maria Rua Aguete highlighted that 21% of 18–24-year-olds are now watching content on smart TVs. However, mobile-first content remains crucial as mobile devices continue to be a primary viewing platform for this demographic.

4. Cloud is king, But edge computing is next in line

While the cloud remains a dominant force in data storage and processing, edge computing is rapidly gaining traction. As demand for instant streaming experiences grows, edge computing is stepping up to reduce latency and enhance performance, ensuring smooth and fast content delivery.

5. The Metaverse & VR: Awaiting the big breakthrough

The metaverse and VR are still on the brink of mainstream adoption. Although the potential is clear, particularly with impressive VR setups, we’re awaiting a breakthrough that will push these technologies beyond gaming and niche applications.

6. FAST channels flexed their muscles

Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television (FAST) is making waves. With ad revenue expected to drive 55% of the entertainment and media industry’s growth over the next five years, FAST channels are emerging as a powerful model. They offer a win-win for both advertisers and viewers who appreciate free content.

7. Sustainability (kind of) took the spotlight

Sustainability was a major theme at IBC 2024. The industry is making significant strides with eco-friendly broadcasting solutions and energy-efficient technology. Even cloud computing is becoming more sustainable, benefiting both the environment and the industry.
