Launching a new brand with monetisation in mind

Launched in April 2022, owned and operated by News UK, TalkTV is a brand new linear TV channel built on the back of TalkRadio. News UK chose Simplestream to power a set of OTT and streaming services, in a multi-platform environment and with a series of innovative features to engage its audience and augment profitability.  

Reduced time-to-market, scalability, and enhanced monetisation were at the core of News UK’s requirements for the launch of its TalkTV brand. Not to forget a simplified architecture that can allow for further expansion in the near future.

Solutions

Media Manager and App Platform for simplified live and on demand workflows

Media Manager and App Platform were deployed to power a complex architecture of OTT services, across multiple devices. Simplestream also worked as a system integrator, harmonising a few third parties to enhance the functionality and create seamless workflows both for live and on demand distribution of content, across multiple devices.

Two live streams, both provided by Amagi, sit at the core of the linear distribution of TalkTV video content, these are used simultaneously for linear distribution and creating catchup from live. For the automated creation of on demand assets, the solution initially leveraged EPG data and the Live2VOD module within Media Manager. The workflow evolved into using SCTE-35 markers, which allows the creation of more accurate catchups and exclude linear ad slots.

The need for TalkTV to seamlessly curate their content presentation on any screen was satisfied by the flexibility of App Platform’s framework, with endless opportunities to enhance engagement with the audience. Simplestream integrated the services with data analytics partner NPAW, as well as Branch.io for in-app deep linking and enhanced user engagement, and Sourcepoint for privacy and consent management. Finally, monetisation is pursued through advertising – both for live and VOD – through server-side and client-side workflows.

Results

Multi-platform, news consumption experiences

TalkTV was launched with original programming as well as video simulcasts of TalkRadio. Simplestream helped News UK to power TalkTV’s suite of OTT and streaming services by leveraging App Platform and Media Manager. Not only was the set of services brought to market in less than eight weeks, TalkTV was also made available since its launch on web, iOS, Android, tvOS, and Fire TV platforms.  

Responding to the general audience’s thirst for more information, presented in a modern and compelling way, TalkTV has entered the streaming landscape with a strong, seamless OTT offering across multiple devices.
